Dentures are necessary when teeth must be replaced or too many have been lost. They provide the ability to retain the facial structure and give the owner the ability to eat properly. However, to work correctly, the dentures must also be secure in the mouth, which can be challenging over time. Unlike implants, conventional dentures are secured with adhesive after being fitted into the mouth to stay in place. That said, if the fit is not done correctly or the dentures wear over time, the fit can become loose, and then the dentures move when least expected.
The mouth is constantly changing. When teeth are lost, the jawbone loses the pressure it needs. Eventually, like anything not used consistently, the jawbone thins. When this occurs, the original fit when the dentures were first provided no longer works.
The easiest solution is to update the adhesive to hold the dentures in place. Working with a dentist, a patient can be prescribed better adhesives that work better but don’t harm the gum line surface. Then they simply follow their denture care instructions as before.
Alternatively, the dentures can be reshaped and relined to fit better the way the gum line and jawbone are shaped now versus the original fit. This has a longer value and better result as it deals with the real issue, the changing jawbone, versus just making things stick better with an adhesive alone.
Finally, the dentures could be replaced altogether with implants. An implant can be a single tooth or a bridge with multiple teeth. In either case, the implant root is surgically embedded into the jawbone. Then the denture is attached to the abutments fixed over the implant and fitted in place. Once complete, the implant-supported restoration acts like a natural tooth or teeth, depending on what’s needed. There’s no need to take them out or work on repositioning them. The implants stay in place as they are fixed to the jaw. This means the patients can talk, eat, sleep, and live with replacement teeth that stay in place permanently.
